5 French experts in Australia to provide assistance in the bushfires crisis

A team of five French firefighting experts arrived in Australia yesterday, and will work with their Australian counterparts over the next week.

Their presence in Australia demonstrates France’s solidarity with Australia during this crisis. This support was first expressed by French President Emmanuel Macron to the Australian Prime Minister during their phone call on Sunday 5th of January.

The three objectives of this scoping mission are the following:
+ to share best practices in bushfire response, regarding in particular forest fires, aerial control strategies and crisis management.
+ to evaluate, in close link with the Australian authorities, the scale and modalities of a French bilateral assistance to Australia and/or a multilateral assistance within a EU-led response, that could be deployed in the next few weeks should Australian authorities request such support,
+ to foster future cooperation against bushfires between French and Australian firefighters, in Australia or New Caledonia, based on their mutual expertise in recent years.

Starting from Canberra, they will travel to Victoria and New South Wales in order to assess how France could best support Australia against such unprecedented bushfires.
