Celebration of the 91st anniverary of the Armistice (Nov.11, 2009)
On November 11, 2009, France like Australia commemorated the 91st anniversary of the Armistice of 1918, which marked the end of the First World War.
In France, the President, Mr. Nicolas Sarkozy and the German Chancellor, Mrs. Angela Merkel, participated in the first common ceremony, which took place at the base of The Arc de Triumph in Paris, to pay homage to all the soldiers of the First World War and to celebrate the Franco-German reconciliation.

In Australia, as well as the commemorations led by the Australian authorities, the Embassy of France in Canberra paid homage in front of the French and Australian war memorial in the French Embassy. The ceremony included representatives of civil authorities and the Australian military, as well representatives of the Diplomatic core and of various war veterans’ associations (see the ceremony booklet).
