Climate – Opening of “informal ministerial consultations” (July 20 and 21, 2015)
Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development, COP 21 President, will today host the first “informal ministerial consultations” to prepare for the 2015 Paris Climate Conference that will take place in December.
Laurent Fabius decided to organize a series of informal conferences to support, at the political level, the process of negotiations on the main themes under discussion.
The goal of the “informal ministerial consultations,” which will bring together around 40 delegations including about 30 ministers, is to discuss the overall balance of the agreement, its level of ambition and the degree of differentiation that should be retained in order to take into account the situation and levels of development of the different UN member states.
Q - What’s at stake at the international ministerial meeting on the climate negotiations on July 20 and 21? Can we expect to see a “pre-agreement” on the goal of limiting global warming to less than 2°?
A - Please refer to the statement I’ve just made on this topic. The goal isn’t to replace the formal negotiation sessions but to support them at the political level.
