Germanwings plane crash – Statement by M. Laurent Fabius, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development
Paris, 24 March 2015
I was extremely shocked to learn of the accident involving a plane belonging to the airline Germanwings, which was travelling between the cities of Barcelona and Düsseldorf.
The death toll from this tragedy is very heavy. I express my wholehearted solidarity to the bereaved and extend my deepest condolences to them at such a painful time.
I’ve spoken to my German and Spanish colleagues to tell them that we stand alongside them and to assure them that we’re mobilized in the face of this tragedy which has struck our three nations in particular.
I have asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development’s crisis and support centre to take all the necessary measures with the Interior Ministry’s interministerial crisis centre to provide the families with information and assistance, in liaison with the German and Spanish authorities.
I have also asked our French embassies in Berlin and Madrid and our consulates general in Barcelona and Düsseldorf to liaise constantly with all the authorities involved in this disaster.
In the face of this tragedy, the French authorities are taking all steps to gain access to the aircraft wreckage, recover and identify the victims’ bodies and participate in the investigation into the causes of this disaster./.
