Duties of Honorary Consuls

Honorary Consuls, appointed to the capitals of each state (Adelaide, Brisbane, Darwin, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth) and also in Cairns are expected to serve as intermediaries for the main consular authority whose jurisdiction covers the entire Australian continent.

Honorary Consuls, who are not considered public servants, are authorised to undertake limited duties:

• Issue of documents attesting to the existence of a person
• Issue of documents attesting to a person’s place of residence
• Certification of true copies and photocopies of original documents
• Issue of Health certificates for transportation of a corpse when repatriation of the body or ashes is required
• Authentification of a signature (only performed by the Honorary consul in Perth)

Do not hesitate to contact your nearest consular agency as staff can offer you advice, or direct you to the appropriate authority, and, if necessary, request you to approach the Consulate-General of France in Sydney for further assistance.

Please note that Honorary Consuls are not competent in visas matter.

To overcome the tyranny of distances, so peculiar to the continent of Australia, the Consul-General and his Deputy will endeavour to organize regular consular visits to the different States in the jurisdiction in order to assist in the completion of administrative formalities such as lodgement of national ID applications, proxy votes for elections in France, lodgement of applications for French nationality or remittance of acquisition of nationality documents.
