Nuclear Test – North Korea – Spokesperson’s statement (Jan. 6)

Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Development Laurent Fabius spoke today with his Korean counterpart, Yun Byung-se, about the North Korean nuclear test on January 6. He must also speak with his Japanese and Chinese counterparts.

France condemns the nuclear test just carried out by North Korea in the strongest possible terms.

North Korea is once again choosing the path of confrontation rather than accepting the outstretched hand of the international community. This illegal act, which violates Security Council resolutions 1718, 1874, 2087 and 2094, represents a threat to international peace and security.

It is also a violation of the universally accepted prohibition against nuclear testing constituted by the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban treaty (CTBT).

Together with its partners and within the framework of the UN Security Council, France will draw the conclusions of this act.

It urges North Korea to promptly comply with its international obligations and proceed with the complete, verifiable, and irreversible dismantling of its nuclear and ballistic programs.

In the immediate term, North Korea must unconditionally refrain from any gesture liable to further heighten tensions on the Korean Peninsula and undermine international peace and security.
