Opening of the New Caledonia Delegation in Australia [fr]

Based at the Embassy of France in Canberra, the role of the New Caledonia Delegation in Australia consists in reinforcing the political dialogue between New Caledonia and Australia, and growing cooperation in the fields of economy and trade, culture and education, and science and innovation.

On January 14, 2019, Dr Yves LAFOY was appointed Official Representative of New Caledonia to Australia. Based at the Embassy of France in Canberra, the role of the New Caledonia Delegation in Australia consists in reinforcing the political dialogue between New Caledonia and Australia, and growing cooperation in the fields of economy and trade, culture and education, and science and innovation.

The opening of the New Caledonia Delegation in Canberra is an outcome of the agreement signed between France and New Caledonia in Paris in January 2012 that enabled New Caledonia to open its first overseas diplomatic representation in the region, in November 2012, housed in the French Embassy in Wellington and headed by Dr Yves Lafoy, Official Representative of New Caledonia to New Zealand.

In 2019, the New Caledonia’ Delegation in Australia, in collaboration with DFAT’s Pacific Branch, will focus on the drafting of a Joint Cooperation Plan between New Caledonia and Australia which will aim at intensifying institutional and cooperation (culture and science) relations, together with trade opportunities and exchanges.

The Nouméa Accord of 9 May 1998 and consequent Organic Law (March 1999) provide the constitutional framework under which New Caledonia is governed.
