The French managing director of the centenary mission, Joseph Zimet in visit to Australia [fr]

Mr Joseph Zimet, managing director of the centenary mission, was in Australia from December 5th to December 7th. The purpose of his visit was to prepare the remembrance sequences taking place in 2018 in France. He also wanted to move forward the foundation project around Sir John Monash Center, which is due to be inaugurated in Villiers Bretonners in April 24th 2018 in attendance of high ranked Australian and French authorities.

During his stay in Australia, Mr Zimet met some important Australian political characters such as Minister for Veterans’ Affairs the Hon Dan Tehan and the Hon Brendan Nelson, Director of the Australian War Memorial. All in all, Mr Zimet interacted with around 10 Australian officials in charge of military commemorations. Centenary of the First World War armistice, the year 2018 will be particularly loaded in terms of commemorations.

The Anzac Day (April 25th 2018) will be dedicated to the commemoration of the centenary of the battle of Villers-Bretonneux and a special ceremony will be organised on July 4th to commemorate the centenary of the battle of Hamel. The next November 11th ceremony will take place in Villers Bretonneux.

Amongst the 332000 men and women part of the volunteer contingent who left their homeland to take part to the First World War, 60000 died on the battlefield, 45000 of them on the western front. 8000 died during the battle of the Dardanelles and 156000 were wounded, taken prisoner or gazed.

Due to the huge price paid by Australia, only a five millions people country in 1914, the engagement of the Diggers amongst the ANZAC is a basic element of the Australian national identity. It durably united our respective nations by the price of the blood spilled.

Each year, the French embassy organises a commemorative ceremony on November 11th, paying tribute to the sacrifice of those soldiers. Dan Tehan was notably present this year.
