Visit of the Minister of Defense, J-Y. The Drian [fr]
The Minister of Defense, Jean-Yves Le Drian,visited Australia from 19 to 20 December 2016. This visit was part of the signing of an intergovernmental strategic agreement.
On Monday, December 19, the minister met with his counterpart, Ms. Marise Payne, in Sydney for a bilateral meeting on current defense issues between the two countries.
The two ministers then gave a press conference to answer questions from French and Australian press.
In the afternoon, the Minister visited the Thales group with the Ambassador of France to Australia, H.E. Christophe Lecourtier.
The ministerial delegation then flew to Adelaide on Tuesday, 20 December. There, the Minister signed an intergovernmental strategic agreement allowing France to transfer its know-how and advanced technologies to Australia in order to reach and support a sovereign submarine capacity - following the selection of DCNS group to build the next australian submarines fleet. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, in presence of Defense Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne, co-signed this "historic" agreement.
The three men then inaugurated the offices of DCSN in Adelaide.
To conclude his visit, the Minister held a bi-lateral meeting with the Hon. Jay Weatherill, Premier of South Australia.
